Polystyrene-free: the future of sustainable packaging

The increased sustainability of packaging solutions is continuing to pick up pace, according to Skye Oudemans, Sustainability Manager at Sonoco Europe. Here, she discusses Sonoco’s Polystyrene (PS)-free offering

Europe: Leading the Shift

Polystyrene in its various forms has attracted the attention of legislators, such as in the Directive on single-use plastics, and therefore is being considered carefully by businesses reviewing their packaging portfolio. Furthermore, recycling targets in legislation like the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, state that 70 percent of all packaging waste will need to be recycled.

Market-Driven Shift

The shift towards PS-free packaging is also driven by industry effort and market demand, as businesses work to rationalise their packaging portfolios to ensure they are using the right materials and formats for the right functions to protect the products inside.

In conclusion, PS-free packaging can help businesses improve their packaging recyclability and environmental impact.
