You only have to look around you to see that packaging is everywhere! From cleaning products to crisp packets and drinks bottles. Without even thinking about it, we have all been influenced to buy something because of the design of packaging.
The IOM3 Starpack Student Competition is designed to bring packaging ideas to life. It’s an opportunity for students to showcase great ideas and solutions directly to industry experts looking for rising stars to join the packaging world.
The competition is open to students studying a wide range of Higher Education courses, from those with a graphics emphasis to courses concerned with structural/product design, as well as materials/technology courses. This year’s briefs range from designing personal daily care products and metal packs for mobile phones to packaging that helps reduce consumer food waste.
George Torrens from Loughborough University, UK, said, “We chose to involve our students in the Starpack Awards as it gives them a chance to learn about sustainability and branding while also having an opportunity to win an award.”
He adds: “The resources available and individual feedback from industry judges is very much appreciated by every student.”
Winners receive cash prizes and some sponsors offer fantastic opportunities for work placements with leading packaging companies.
Megan Jackson, Shopper and Activation Executive at Perfetti van Melle, who has previously won two awards said, “Winning the Gold and Sponsor Prize for the Smurfit Kappa brief at the Student Starpack competition 2018 ultimately led to my employment at Smurfit Kappa Display UK.”
