Carlsberg’s £3.3bn takeover of Britvic cleared by High Court judge

A High Court judge has given the green light to Carlsberg’s £3.3 billion takeover deal of Britvic, paving the way for a single integrated drinks business called Carlsberg Britvic.

Based in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, Britvic employs approximately 4,500 people and holds Robinsons, Tango and Lipton amongst its portfolio.

Mr Justice Hildyard sanctioned the takeover at a hearing on Wednesday, stating the proposed deal “could be and should be approved”.

In written submissions for Britvic, Andrew Thornton KC, referred to the company as “the largest supplier of branded still soft drinks and the number two supplier of carbonated soft drinks in Great Britain”.

The companies originally announced the agreement last July, stating the deal would create an “enlarged international group” that can expand into “multiple drinks sectors”.

The acquisition was approved by Britvic’s shareholders last August, with both the Competition and Markets Authority, and the European Commission giving their approval in December.
